I’m the author of the eight-book Matterhorn the Brave series. The time-travel fantasy began a quarter-century ago as bedtime stories for my four children. I crafted a character for each that reflected their unique personality and strengths. It was my way of giving them role models they could identify with and grow into.
It began with [...]

56 and Counting
I turn 56 years old today (295 in dog years), an accomplishment to which I have devoted my entire life. I have the knees of a 40-year-old, the hair of a 60-year-old and the eyesight of an 80-year-old.
Here’s me modeling two of my favorite birthday gifts.
By way of back story, I’m summarizing my life so far [...]

The Disciple’s Prayer
Here’s my version of the Disciple’s Prayer found in Matthew 6.
You’re God – I’m not.
Your will be done – as if I could change it.
Meet my needs – I’m dependent.
You forgive – so I’ll forgive.
Steer me from evil – I’m vulnerable.
Amen – make it so.

So Long San Diego!
Dr. Dax’s nurse called to say he wants to start chemo as soon after my August 1st visit as possible. Based on my scans, he’s changed his mind about waiting until after my planned vacation in San Diego. Crap!
I’m anxious to get going with the treatments but disappointed about not getting the time away with [...]

A True Brother
Anne Lamott shares this amazing cancer story in Bird by Bird. Have a Kleenex handy.
Here is the best true story on giving I know, and it was told by Jack Kornfield of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre. An eight-year-old boy had a younger sister who was dying of leukemia, and he was told [...]

An Answer to Prayer – Or Is It?
Barb Hunt, my independent insurance agent, has worked her magic. She has shepherded my application through the process and gotten Kaiser to accept it! I will have full insurance coverage starting August 1. The premiums are almost $1,100 a month but that will be much less than the chemo treatments.
I am very thankful for [...]

Would You Like Some Cheese with That Whine?
I’m more emotionally drained tonight as life does its usual things. I had to take the car to the mechanic and it cost $400 to replace the alternator. (That’s a tenth of the price of a CT biopsy though, so I’m not complaining.) Then the insurance company wanted more info about my 1099 income, although [...]
