Back to Sleep

I want to revisit my post of January 14 and add a few lines about sleep I just ran across in David Shields new book, The Thing About Life Is That One Day You’ll Be Dead:

On average, infants sleep 20 hours a day, 1-year-olds sleep 13 hours a day, teenagers sleep 9 hours, 40-year-olds sleep [...]

It’s a Party!

The Hamel family had a party yesterday to celebrate Julie’s 27th birthday and my successful completion of chemo. My last two scans have been clear and I’m considered in “remission.”

The American Cancer Society defines emission as “a period of time when the cancer is responding to treatment or is under control. In a complete remission, [...]

Civilizing Influence

Along with 108 million other Americans, I start my day with a cup of java. I usually have mine at Agia Sophia’s, the coffee shop and bookstore where I am writing this. The beans are freshly ground and brewed in a French Press.

New Name

My cells seem to be behaving properly these days but my mind continues to act up, so I’m shifting the focus of my blog from soma to psyche.

Since this blog is where I can say what I want about anything I want, I’ve renamed it “OPEN Mike.” Readers can interact with me via Comments [...]

Tumor Free

No one is cancer free; our bodies make millions of defective cells. I am, however, now among the TUMOR FREE, for which I am extremely grateful: to God, to the medical community at Memorial Hospital and to all those who prayed for and helped me along the way. I’m not out of the woods, as [...]

Recovering Lymphomaniac

My name is Mike and I’m a recovering Lymphomaniac. It’s been six weeks since my last chemo binge. According to my most recent CT scan I’m tumor free but I don’t take this for granted. I continue to work hard at staying healthy.

Lymphos don’t have as much energy as they used to, so I shortened [...]
