Why Didn’t Jesus . . .

I’m not the first writer to ask, why didn’t Jesus write a book? We know he wanted his story written down and passed on because that’s what the disciples subsequently did under the influence of his Spirit. So why not start the ball rolling himself?

Or why not dictate his memoirs to Matthew or another of the literate apostles during the 40 days after his resurrection? Give them a written catechism to take to Jerusalem, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the Earth? Why make his church wait decades for secondhand and sometimes contradictory gospels (e.g. the resurrection accounts)?

Had Jesus penned his own gospel, it would have eliminated so much ambiguity and emphasized exactly what he thought was important. The subsequent eyewitness accounts could corroborate his story and the forthcoming epistles could have built upon it. There would be a clear hierarchy among holy texts. Such a book would still have been subjected to controversy and criticism; no question about that. But it would have been a more solid anchor point for the whole New Testament.

For whatever reasons, Jesus chose not to pick up a pen or confide in a scribe. Care to share your speculations as to why not?

  1. “the Lamb’s book of life” Revelation 21:27

Be patient: it’s a work in progress; Final draft coming soon!

  2. And a PS: I think it’s psossible that Jesus did dictate the gospels to Matthew and the others during the 40 days after resurrection. Just as in some way God told Moses the to write the first 5 books.

  3. OK. I’ve got MY answer.

Jesus didn’t write the NT because it wasn’t finished tll John received the Revelation. He could have written the gospel, but when would HE have had time to minister and teach? Didn’t one of the gospel writers say He did so many miracles that all the books in the world couldn’t contain them? He had no wireless devices, not even spiral bound notebooks and gel pens to carry around.
Can you imagine reading the gospels in 1st person? “I healed 10 lepers today, only one came back to thank ME”. AAAGGHHH.

And finally, I believe He did indeed write the NT, as well as the Old. I can’t remember the exact quote, but all Scripture was inspired by God, and the Spirit moved men to write it. And now that I’ve really thought about it, I am convinced that His plan was so brilliant, and wise, that no mortal man would have dreamed of doing it that way….

66 authors … 2,000 plus years? And it is STILL a best-seller … Only God could pull that off.
